Background and Meaning

Basho visits Hiraizumi on June 29th in 1689, where it was once the seat of the Northern branch of the Fujiwara family, which was destroyed in 1189. As he sees what it was once a battle field (Summer grass), the ancient Chinese Poet from Du Fu comes to his head.

“The state is destroyed, / rivers and hills remain. / The city walls return to spring, / grasses and trees are green. “

With this lines in his head, he lay down his bamboo hat and let time and tears flow

The glory of three generations of Fujiwara vanished in the space of a dream; the remains of the Great Gate stood two miles in the distance. Hidehira’s headquarters had turned into rice paddies and wild fields. Only Kinkeizan, Golden Fowl Hill, remained as it was

In the past, the Fujiwara clan dreamed of prosperity and glory. But in the midst of nature’s activity, such prosperity and glory have become a vain and temporary dream, and now the summer grasses just grow thicker and thicker without a care in the world.

This haiku is taken from a climatic episode in Basho’s most-read travel journal, The Narrow Road to the Interior (Oku no Hosomichi). It operates on two axes. The fragment (line 1) is a scenic description from the present world, the site of a formal battlefield; the phrase (lines 2 and 3) “refers to the passage of time: the summer grasses are the ‘aftermath’ of the dreams of glory (Shirane, pp. 238)
