Balance, The Doctorin of The Mean（中庸）- Japanese 2 Character Kanji Calligraphy For Tattoo Design
If you are looking for ‘Balance’ in Kanji, then this is the perfect choice for you.
The word ‘Balance’ is a tricky one and you need to be very careful when you translate it into Japanese.
If you google translate ‘Balance’, it will come up with the following words
- 残高 (Balance as a book keeping term)
- 平均 (Average)
- 平衡 (Equilibrium)
I’m assuming that these are not really what you are after.
If you are looking for Balance as in somewhere along the line of Harmony, then 「調和」should be your choice. But if you are looking for ‘Balance’ as in the opposite of ‘Extreme’, then this is the one for you.
Let’s say, on a spectrum, one extreme side is ‘Reckless’ and the other extreme is ‘Coward’, the balance between these two is ‘Courage’ or ‘Valor’
Not only will this phrase impress your friends but also it has a better ring to it than 『バランス』, which is the literal translation of ‘Balace’.
Literal meaning of 「中庸」
Here are the meaning of each Kanji
- 中 : Middle
- 庸 : Plain, humble
Not only does this mean ‘Balance’ but also this has a connotation of being ethically right.
This word originates in confucianism teaching and Aristotle, the ancient Greek philosopher, put it ‘The Doctrine of The Mean’
Is「中庸」better than 「バランス」?
In modern Japanese, ‘Balance’ is バランス (in Katakana, not Kanji ) and it is pronounced just like ‘Balance’ in Japanese sound.
Like it was mentioned above, バランス comes with broader connotations and if you want to be a bit more specifice, 中庸 is a better option.
Also it maybe useful to note that Katakana looks more of cute, adorable, comical rather than cool. Thus not really suitable for your conviction or resolution.
I know that beauty is in the eyes of beholders so if you find バランス cooler, I am not in the position to tell you ‘No, you shouldn’t go for that one !’

If you are looking to use the design just as it appears and not wanting to resize, then the “jpeg” should be fine.
But if you are looking to

- change the layout / position
(e.g, vertical▶️horizontal / angled, etc)
then the “pdf” should be your choice as it will less work for your tattoo artist, meaning costs less.
